What is periodontics?
Periodontics is the discipline of dentistry responsible for preventing, diagnosing and treating the diseases that affect the gums and the bone that supports the teeth.
When bacteria accumulate under the gum, they can cause a progressive infection that, if uncontrolled, eventually damages the tooth's support. The aim of periodontal treatment is to eliminate the infection, reduce inflammation and stabilise the disease.
Most frequent periodontal diseases:
- Gingivitis: superficial inflammation of the gums, reversible if treated in time.
- Periodontitis: a more advanced infection that affects the bone supporting the tooth and can cause mobility or tooth loss.
